  1. A steep-sided flat-topped hill, formed in
  2. horizontally layered sedimentary rocks,
  3. largely in arid areas. A large butte with a
  4. pronounced tablelike profile is a mesa.
  5. Buttes and mesas are characteristic of
  6. semi-arid areas where remnants of resistant
  7. rock layers protect softer rock underneath,
  8. as in the plateau regions of Colorado, Utah,
  9. and Arizona, USA.
